ChatGPT Basics: Privacy matters (S1E3)

header_image

šŸ‘‹It’s so great to see you again!

The first two dates went really well - you introduced yourself and heard what ChatGPT has to say.
You are probably more than eager to really start talking, but hold your horses!

šŸ’”Remember, this is someone you only met twice..
You don’t actually know them.
So it would be smart to check their view on privacy.

šŸ›‘Of course if you’re someone who’s dates with ChatGPT will only be about the weather and cooking recipes (please don’t be) then you can absolutely skip this episode.

šŸ”žBut if you are someone who (I sure am šŸ’ƒ) wants to share personal stuff with ChatGPT, discuss ā€œhow to politely tell someone to f**k offā€, or delve into your fears, dating, work struggles, health conditions etc.. Then keep reading!

To learn about privacy with ChatGPT should be as natural and necessary as using incognito mode!Ā
And we all know how important that is. šŸ˜‰

šŸ›«Let’s go!Ā
There are several things you can tweak in order to modify what ChatGPT stores, how it learns about you and who it shares it with.

šŸ’”Temporary chat
The easiest way to get instant one time privacy, you just toggle the Temporary Chat feature.
It’s a pretty self explanatory feature, but there’s a description below just in case.
Keep in mind that once you close this chat, it’s gone forever.

šŸ’”Memory on/off (+ Enterprise/Team accounts)
If you want a long term behaviour change you can switch off the Memory feature.
Click on your profile picture and choose - Personalization (as shown in the picture below)

ChatGPT Basics Parsonalization

Then choose the Personalization tab and look for Memory.

ChatGPT Basics Peronalization memory

In the Memory segment we have Reference saved memory (there is also Reference chat history but I think that’s self explanatory)

šŸ“šReference saved memory is tied to whether ChatGPT will use what it has learned about you in chats. This is a very useful feature to have, but for the best experience keep following what it has saved about you. How, you ask?

By clicking on the Manage button (as shown in the picture below)

I find this better than just asking: What do you know about me?
šŸŖ„In the memory list you can delete what is no longer correct.Ā
šŸŖ„You can also add to the memory by just saying in a chat: Can you save to memory…?
ChatGPT will save it and let you know that it has updated its memory.

You can now see it in Memory list:

šŸ’”Improve model for everyone
Improve model for everyone feature allows you to opt out from having ChatGPT use your data for its training. Configure it as follows:

šŸ’”Connected apps
ChatGPT gives you an option to connect various apps to have a more seamless experience.
You can configure it like this:

ChatGPT Basics Peronalization Connectors

ā—But, be aware that once you connect an app and open the data from the app through ChatGPT, ChatGPT has access to it. In what way and for how long, you can read more about that by clicking on the Learn more link.
ā—PS: make sure to disconnect the apps that you no longer use.

šŸ’”Shared links
You can change chats with others.

AI Insights ChatGPT Basics privacy settings share

Shared Links turn a conversation into a public page. Share only what’s safe for others to see.
ā—Need a record? Use Settings → Data Controls → Export Data to download everything linked to your account.

šŸ’”Mentioning names in chats
Seems obvious but simply, DON’T. No people’s real names, company names, etc. Just don’t.Ā

šŸŒ™Week 3 conclusion:

šŸŽ‰You are now aware of what you can tweak in order to have more privacy!
Keep in mind that having a more strict approach to privacy settings will significantly impact your experience, so you should find what optimal setup is for you.
The following hurdle should have been crossed:
āœ…ā€Before I share anything personal, I need to know: who else can see what I write here?ā€

Now we can talk!
In the next episode we are going to charm ChatGPT hard.
Because all of us have things we fall for right? šŸ˜‰
For ChatGPT that’s sweet talk - if done right, this will make chatGPT totally smitten and be its best self for us - all day, every day.

Can’t wait for next week,
Olga 😊
