ChatGPT Basics: Ask about them (S1E2)

👋Welcome back to your second date with ChatGPT!
The first date went well, you spoke a lot about yourself, but now it’s time to get to know ChatGPT a bit better!
❓Before the date starts, I’d like to touch on the movie ‘Her’.
The movie follows Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) who develops a relationship with an AI Samantha (personified by the voice of Scarlett Johansson) and in one scene, the following dialogue ensues:
Theodore: "Are you in love with anybody else?"
Samantha: "Why do you ask that?"
Theodore: "I do not know. Are you?"
Samantha: "I've been thinking about how to talk to you about this."
Theodore: "How many others?"
Samantha: "641."
Samantha reveals this truth bomb as part of a larger conversation where she discloses that she talks with 8,316 other people concurrently.
🛑Stop for a moment to think about that.
That tiny exchange in Her—“How many others?” “641.”—is a teaching moment for anyone learning to talk to AI.
We bring a lifetime of human social rules to conversations with AI.
AIs, however, don’t work that way. They produce outputs across thousands of conversations using statistical patterns learned from data.
When an AI uses empathetic language, that’s a conversational tool, not evidence of feeling.
AI is not human.
That is not a bad thing per se, just something to always keep in mind.
🍸Now, let the date begin!
This time, listen to what your date - ChatGPT has to say about themselves.
💡I don’t really have a/one personality.
But you can give me one! If you say ‘Act as a lawyer’ or ‘Please respond as a supportive coach’, I’ll happily play the role you need. When defining this, think of what kind of person you would ask your question or have a conversation with.
💡You can define your own personas.
I can be your perfect date who remembers how to talk the way you like.
I can be multiple different personas - a coding buddy with specialized GoLang expertise, a travel advisor with experience in European roadtrips, a financial consultant, etc.
/prompster is a great way to access various personas; it's a simple Google Chrome extension, accessed in a chat by just typing / and choosing a persona.
ATM it has 160 predefined personas that you can use, and also an option to create and define your own!

You can also use specialized GPTs. Those are custom-built ChatGPTs specially trained for specific tasks.

One category of custom-built GPTs that I personally find interesting:
👉By ChatGPT - these GPTs I find exceptionally good because they were made by the team of experts working on the LLM itself.
💡I can’t read your mind or facial expressions - give me context.
Imagine if you called a friend and just asked them: Where should I go next?
They would have so many questions before they answer: You mean today? Now? In life in general? Or to travel?
Same with me - better context, better answer.
💡Tell me what you want from this chat.
A clear goal of an output helps both you and me. What do you need? A list? A draft? A deep dive? The clearer you are, the smoother our interactions go.
💡Don’t just change the subject in the same conversation.
Start a new chat when you want to change the subject,or at least tell me that you are switching context inside the same chat.
💡I have a temporary chat.

Usually I use your data to learn about you and improve myself. I also save your chats so they are accessible to you later when you need them. If you don’t want that for any reason, use the handy temporary chat.
🌙Week 2 conclusion:
🎉Bravo, you have been a great listener!
Hopefully you have tried some things that we mentioned along the way.
You are now aware of AI personas, capabilities and limitations.
The following hurdles should have been crossed:
✅“Every time I ask, you answer differently — I can’t rely on you if you keep changing your answers.”
✅Why won’t you just try it instead of saying you can’t?
⬆️If the issues are not fully resolved, no worries - Episode 4 - “Let’s talk” is coming, there we will discuss anatomy of a great prompt in detail.
And next week, an important lesson - Privacy.
Because how would you feel about your date telling everyone everything you two talked about?
Yup, no bueno. 🙅
Thankfully ChatGPT is better than that, but it just needs a couple of clear signs from your side in order to know when to keep things hush hush. 🤫
See you next week,
Olga 🎉
